FINANCES IN ORDER

Are You Prepared?

6 Steps to planning a will Under the umbrella of organization, we find that having a will in place can really bring about financial order. Since there is some preparation that we are responsible for ahead of time, this tends to lead most of us on an organizational journey.

Although at first, the topic of conversation usually brings about concerns of what will happen to our children, home, savings and valuables, if we were to suddenly die, it also prompts us to take a deeper look at our organizational life.

A common question people initially ask is, “Why should I have a will?”

The answer to that is to maintain some control over your life and estate. No matter how big or small your estate is, shouldn’t you have the right to determine how things get distributed? If you decide not to do anything at all, you run the risk of the State stepping in and determining how and to whom your estate will be distributed.

Once this is explained, most opt to take matters into their own hands and take the necessary steps to prepare for their estate, which ultimately brings about peace of mind. Here are six steps to remember before visiting your attorney.

Number 1 Make a list of all your possessions. This includes real estate, savings, securities, bonds, pensions, family heirlooms and anything else that falls under this category. In other words, take inventory of what you own and assign it the proper value.

Number 2 Make a list of the recipients of whom you would like to leave your possessions to. This should include name, address and telephone numbers and any special wishes you would like to have carried out with respect to your particular belongings.

Number 3 Select a person that you would like to have as “Executor” of your estate. This individual should be someone that you trust and respect as they will be responsible for managing your assets and following out your instructions in your will.

Number 4 Select a “Guardian” to take care of your children. This is a very thought provoking step which requires proper consideration and open communication with the individual you select. It also opens up dialogue for choosing a “Trustee” for managing your children’s funds.

Number 5 Now that you have written down all your decisions, take time to digest it all. Consult with trusted family and friends for feedback. Sometimes receiving input from another person can help us put things into perspective and get the results we desire.

Number 6 You are now ready to find an attorney to execute your will. The best way to select someone is by asking other people you trust. Don’t be afraid to interview a few candidates and ask lots of questions, such as; “What is your fee schedule?” and “How is your billable time determined?”

Let them know the work you did ahead of time for consideration with billable time, then select the one with whom you feel the most comfortable. e
